CAAS Professional Ambulance Service First Massachusetts Agency Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS)
Professional Ambulance Service (PRO) has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services for its compliance with national standards of excellence. PRO becomes the 103rd service to succesfully complete the voluntary review process which includes completion of a comprehensive application and on-site review by national experts in emergency medical services (EMS). With this achievement, PRO becomes the only ambulance service in Massachusetts, and one of only three agencies in New England, to be CAAS Accredited. There are only eight (8) communities in the United States, of which Cambridge is now one, served by an ISO Class 1 Fire Department and a CAAS Accredited Ambulance Service.
The Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) was formed in 1990 as a not-for-profit agency to be a standard bearer for medical transportation systems. It is sponsored by the American Ambulance Association, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the National Association of EMS Physicians, the National Association of State EMS Officials, the National Association of EMT's, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, with liaison representation from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Accreditation signifies that ambulance services have met the "gold standard" determined by the ambulance industry to be essential in modern emergency medical services providers.
In discussing the accreditation, Bill Mergendahl, Chief Executive Officer of Professional Ambulance said, "CAAS is a vital element of the structure and focus used to continuously improve all aspects of our operation. The CAAS process itself has driven us to excel. All services can benefit from working to reach this 'gold standard." Mergendahl added, "CAAS Accreditation has long been a goal of ours. Thanks to the dedication of our people, the agencies we work with every day, and many others, we have been able to realize this achievement becoming one of 103 CAAS accredited agencies out of over 15,000 EMS agencies in the United States. We are proud to be a part of an EMS system with the Cambridge Fire Department, the only ISO Class 1 Fire Department in Massachusetts."
